How to Use Essential Oils

There are three ways you can use your doTERRA essential oils. Aromatically, topically, and internally. Only a few drops are needed per application as a little goes a long way. To address health challenges, it is more effective to use a small amount of oil more consistently/frequently than to use a large amount of oil at one time. No matter how much oil you use at one time, your body will only be able to metabolize a certain amount to get the health benefits it needs.

Aromatically

To use the oils aromatically, you can place a few drops in a diffuser or breathe in straight from the bottle or from rubbing a drop on your hands and cupping them over your nose. Using the oils aromatically helps to open the airways, clean the air of pathogens, and affect your overall mood. Great oils to use aromatically would include Frankincense, Eucalyptus, or even a blend of oils such as On Guard to strengthen immunity, Breathe for respiratory relief, or Serenity for relaxation.

Oil Tip: Diffusers can be a great addition to your daily oil use. I love using my Petal Diffuser to clean and freshen the air of bacteria and toxins and breathing in the oils to aid in my family’s overall immunity. Plus my apartment always smells amazing while diffusing!

Topically

To use the oils topically, put a drop or two on the bottom of your feet or affected areas to aid in support of specific needs or to give direct relief. To stretch the oils farther, you can dilute with carrier oils such as fractionated coconut oil or a lotion, such as Amber’s Essentials all natural homemade lotion made with coconut oil and Shea butter.

Oil Tip: Do not apply oils to the eyes or in the ears as these are sensitive membranes. Simply apply the oils around the eye or ear to still get the great benefits of apply oils directly. If you happen to get oil in your eyes, rinse with a carrier oil such as fractionated coconut oil. DO NOT use water as this will push the oil further into your membranes and may cause irritation of the eye or ear drum.

Internally

In order to use them internally make sure they are CPTG and have a supplement label on the side of the bottle. Putting a drop in a glass of water, under your tongue, in a gel capsule or even using them when baking can help support mouth, throat, digestive, and overall health. Some oils can be very ‘hot’ and burn the inside of you mouth so you need to be cautious of these ones, such as cinnamon and oregano. Great oils to use internally would include Lemon, Peppermint, or even a blend of oils such as Digestzen for stomach relief or Slim & Sassy for metabolism support!

Oil Tip: Since properties in the essential oils can break down the toxins in our bodies, it is important to only use glass or stainless steel containers to drink oils out of. If you use plastic, the essential oils will break down the plastics in the cup and it will leach into your drink. Besides ruining the plastic cup, you wouldn’t want to drink the plastic in the water!
